Synchronization of Parallel Streams: Authoring and Design Principles for iTV Content
Abstract: The paper describes a new iTV Authoring Tool which was developed during the MECiTV (Media Collaboration for interactive TV) project. Three conceptual development steps are introduced for the production of non-linear TV stories. The production workflow and the development of non-linear TV stories are supported by the new authoring tool, which is described in detail. As an important feature, the tool provides the means to synchronise the parallel streams of the non-linear story. In that way 'switching points' for the viewer are defined. Furthermore we propose simple design principles for the guidance of the end user through the parallel story paths which where applied during the production of the prototypical iTV scenario 'Vision Europe'.
