For the achievement of anthropomorphic assistance by embodied conversational agents the perceived verbal and nonverbal behaviour and the underlying principles and algorithms have to be modelled and implemented. In cooperation with the psychology department of the University of Cologne we are investigating the working of nonverbal communication. An authoring framework and interaction components for expressive interactive 3d characters for psychological research and application scenarios allow for a variety of static appearances, dynamic motions and intelligent behaviour of an avatar. Different aspects of communication and nonverbal behaviour are being simulated and investigated separately.
